Day Trips from Seattle

One of Seattle's greatest assets is what surrounds it. Within a couple of hours you can stand under an active volcano, ride a ferry to a quiet island, or wander an alpine village. If you have an extra day, getting out of the city is often the highlight of the whole trip.

Here are the day trips locals actually take, with honest notes on timing and logistics.

Mount Rainier National Park

On a clear day Rainier dominates the horizon, and up close it's even more spectacular — wildflower meadows in summer, glaciers, and waterfalls. The Paradise area is the classic destination, about two to two-and-a-half hours from the city. Go early, bring layers, and check road and weather conditions before you leave.

Bainbridge Island (the easiest escape)

If you only have a few hours, take the ferry to Bainbridge Island. The 35-minute crossing alone is worth it for the skyline views, and the walkable downtown of Winslow has shops, restaurants, and a winery tasting room within strolling distance of the dock. No car required.

Snoqualmie Falls

Just 30–40 minutes east, Snoqualmie Falls is a 268-foot waterfall with an easy viewing platform and a short trail to the base. It's a quick, high-reward stop, easily combined with a meal in the nearby town or a longer drive into the Cascade foothills.

The San Juan Islands

For a bigger adventure, the San Juan Islands offer whale watching, kayaking, and small-town charm. It's a longer day — a drive north to Anacortes plus a ferry — so many visitors turn it into an overnight. If you go, reserve ferry space ahead in summer.

Leavenworth, a Bavarian village

About two hours east through the Cascades, Leavenworth is a Bavarian-themed town that's especially magical in fall and winter. The drive is scenic year-round. It's a full day, but a memorable one if you want mountains and a change of pace.
